Mind Reading – NLP

Mind Reading is the title of one of the most commonly used of the 19 Hypnotic Language Patterns that form the Milton Model in NLP.

One of the fundamentals thinking frames of NLP is that we have a conscious mind, that we use for activities like reading, planning, forming arguments. Conscious thoughts and conscious actions are in our awareness.  We also have an unconscious mind, this mind takes care of all of our thoughts and actions that are outside of our awareness, like breathing when we are asleep, providing us with recurring thought patterns, performing activities that we are familiar with, like aspects of driving a car, brushing our teeth, actions that we perform and we do not need to think about how we are doing them in order to complete them successfully.

Most people who have recurring thoughts and actions that they would like to change in order for them to be happier or live a bigger life have conflict between their conscious thoughts and their unconscious thoughts.  Their conscious thoughts are telling them that they do not want to think in that way, that they do not want to behave in that way, however their unconscious mind is “programmed” by habitual thinking to produce thoughts and actions that are in conflict with this.

The Milton Model language patterns enable you to induce a state of trance in someone which will allow you to communicate with their unconscious mind and “re-programme” thinking so that it produces thoughts and actions that we want and that empower us.

These language patterns are patterns that we use every day and will be familiar to you. It is the deliberate use of them in order to produce the communication that we require to produce trance, that is specific to the Milton Model.

Claiming to know the thoughts of another – Mind Reading

Mind reading statements send the person that you are communicating with into a mild form of confusion at the conscious level.

For example, if I were to say to you “I am sure that you are aware that you are fully responsible for all the results that you get in life.”

Your conscious mind is forced to contemplate what I have just said. “I am sure that you are aware….” Your conscious mind probably says to itself “How do you know that I am aware of that?” Also “Am I actually aware of that?” And “Is that statement true for me?”

In carrying out this contemplation, and it all happens so quickly that you may not be aware of it, your unconscious mind has taken in the message.  If I repeat this message to you consistently over a period of time, I can “programme” your unconscious mind into believing that it is in fact true for you. That is how it works and that is how it can be very effective in producing positive change.

Here are some more example Mind Read statements:

  • I can tell that you are happy reading this and you may think that these statements can be used usefully in Hypnosis.
  • I know that by the time you have read the rest of this statement you will begin to understand how you can put together your own mind reading statements.
  • I’ll bet that you are happy about that.
  • I know that you are wondering if you can easily….make a mind read statement now.

The last statement had a mind read at the beginning and an embedded command at the end. Embedded Commands are another useful NLP Language Pattern.
