GoalsThink of something that you achieved in your life.  Do that now, go on.

Have you got something?  It could be anything e.g. passing your driving test, having children, passing exams, eating less and losing weight.  Anything like that.

So, have you got something?  Good.

How was it that you ended up achieving that thing?  Do you know what process that you followed in order to achieve it?  I mean, do you really understand what it took to get there?

How do you feel about achieving that thing?  How did you feel the minute that you realised that you had achieved it?

I’m going to bet that you had a sense of enjoyment, and sense of satisfaction, you may even have felt elation, and excitement.   In other words it made you happy.

So, if you really understood what it took in order to achieve the things that you want out of life, you could have lots of enjoyment, satisfaction, elation, excitement.  Is that something that appeals to you, happiness?

Usually the first thing that has to happen in order to achieve something is that you have to decide what you want.  That makes sense doesn’t it?

If you start learning a subject that is new to you and you do not really want to learn it, you see no value in learning it, then you are not going to learn it, are you?

On the other hand if you start learning a new subject and you can see a really good use for it in the future for you, then it holds value for you and you will be committed to learning it.

Whenever we achieve anything the first thing that has to happen, is we have to imagine what it would be like to have achieved that thing.  If we have a good positive picture of achieving that thing then we will see value in achieving it and we will be motivated towards achieving it.

Has anyone ever told you that you get what you focus on?  It is true!

So, it makes sense therefore, doesn’t it, to decide what it is that you want in your life?  It makes sense to decide what you want and to picture yourself achieving it.

That is the process of goal setting, and that is why goal setting is so important. If you decide what you want. If you can see value in achieving that thing. Then as long as you keep reminding yourself of why you want it, keep picturing yourself achieving it, then you will achieve it.

What I recommend that you do now is to set yourself some goals.

Start with ten year plus goals.  What do you want in ten years time?  What do you want to have achieved when you reach then end of your life?  What is truly important to you?

Think of goals for each of the following areas of your life:

  • Relationships, love
  • Leisure and fun
  • Money
  • Health
  • Career
  • Contribution

It may help you to refer back to your happiness index that we looked at in the last blog article.

Once you have your long term goals, take these and decide what it is that you will need to accomplish in five years in order to be on track for them.

Where will you be and what do you need to have accomplished in five years?

Then do the same for two year goals and then one year goals.

Once you have set these goals, then you are on the right path for achieving what you want out of life.  I recommend that you review these goals at least every six months. For every goal that you achieve enjoy the feelings that come with achievement and then set another one.

Remember, you get what you focus on, so focus on what you want!
