How is your day going?  Are you feeling good, full of energy, dynamic, and excited about the rest of the day?

What is it that determines whether you are feeling good and happy, or not so good?  Well, simply it is the things that you are focussing on.

Despite what you may think, it doesn’t really matter what events occur throughout your day, it is not the events themselves that determine how you are going to feel, it is how you interpret those events.  Two people may experience exactly the same event, however they may interpret that event differently. One may be left feeling sad, and the other may be left feeling happy.

Say for example two people decide to go for a walk in the hills one afternoon.  They set off with their waterproofs packed away in their backpacks, it is a lovely sunny day and they both enjoy the feeling of the sun on their faces. However, after an hour or so of walking dark clouds roll over and it starts pouring with rain.  It rains solidly for the rest of the walk and they both get a soaking.  At the end of the walk one of the walkers feels energised, a sense of elation and a deep sense of satisfaction.  The other walker feels grumpy, cold, and generally unhappy.

Pillar MountainBoth walkers experienced the same events, they both got soaked, they both had the same clothing on. Only one interpreted the events as being a fun adventure, and the other interpreted the same events as being awful.

So, what happened in their internal processing that led to the differing interpretations?  Well, based on their internal filters, of past memories, their values, beliefs, meta-programs, past decisions, and attitudes, their mind was programmed to provide them with a response to the events (the rain).    One mind processed the events and the response was that it was fun, the other mind processed the events and decided that they should be unhappy about it.

This is the basis of basic NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). How to ensure that your mind is running programmes in such a way that they are empowering for you and enable you to be happy! Our NLP Practitioner Training Courses are designed to provide you with the tools to ensure that you can identify the programmes that you do want to run and eradicate the programmes that are unwanted, the give you ultimate happiness and enable you to reach your potential!

You will have noticed that the walkers response to the events was totally unconscious.  They didn’t decide to be happy or sad, they just ended up that way.

Now, we all run programmes internally that are not empowering for us, and that is why sometimes we have a bad day. We are at risk of focussing on what we do not want, what disempowers us, unless we consciously decide to focus on things that do empower us and things that we do want.

Generally I find that our programmes start running the moment that we wake up and gain momentum throughout the day.  If you start the day by worrying about all the things that you haven’t got in your life, then that will be your focus throughout the day, and you are guaranteeing yourself a miserable day.

So, what better way to start the day than by consciously focussing on things that are going to empower you? I recommend asking yourself the following questions every morning in order to get you feeling great:

  1. What am I happy about in my life now?
  2. What am I grateful for in my life now?
  3. What can I be curious about in my life today?
  4. What am I proud of in my life now?
  5. What am I excited about in my life now?
  6. What am I committed to in my life now?
  7. What am I enjoying most in my life now?
  8. Who loves me or who could love me? Who do I love or who could I love?
Make asking these questions a habit, ask yourself these eight questions every morning.  Ask them of yourself when you are in the shower, or when you are brushing your teeth. Notice how you feel after you have ask these questions. After a while, when the neural pathways have been strengthened,  it will become automatic for you to ask yourself these questions and you will not have to think about it.
One thing is for certain, if you do this every morning you are focussing on things that are empowering for you and it will give you the best possible opportunity to programme yourself for happiness throughout your day.
