How do you do it?
By paying attention to another persons’:
- voice tone and volume
- facial colour
- eye accessing cues and pupil dilation
- muscle tension in the face and forehead
- angle of the head
- balance and weight on the floor or chair
- lower lip size
- breathing pattern
These are known as the ‘modalities of calibration’
Why do you do it?
- When you want to read someones state so that you can recognise it again, to avoid mind reading.
- In order to match and mirror them to build rapport.
- If you are communicating with someone you would calibrate them in order to notice whether there were any indications from an unconscious level or conscious level to suggest whether that you are getting your message across or whether there is resistance. Useful in sales, education and therapy for ensuring effective communication.
