The extent of your happiness and current level of success in life largely comes down to your mind management skills.
Having spent the last twenty years studying and working with people who are being successful, occasionally having success myself, I have noticed that one of the things that these people consistently do is they manage their unconscious processes really well.
Mind Management
They foster a tremendous relationship between their unconscious processes and their conscious processes and skills. This stands out as being one of the factors that separates them from the rest and this is what I mean by mind management.
There is no doubt that there is a correlation between thinking success and achieving success. Inner success and outer success.
Think about the top sports people, top athletes, leading politicians, top people in business, top sales people, there are certain attributes that they all share, certain mindsets that they share and certain habits that they share and that lead them to think slightly differently and create successful results.
Alex Ferguson, one of the UK’s most successful football managers of all time, in his autobiography says that he was reading the biography of Vince Lombardi, one of the most successful American Football coaches of all time, and as he was reading it he thought “this book was written about me!”
Unconscious and Conscious Mind
When I talk about unconscious processes, these are the processes that you carry out and that you are not aware of, that are unconscious to you. Anything that you are not immediately aware of is unconscious. Unconscious processes can be behaviours as simple as breathing, lifting your arm, and they can be as complex as driving to work without crashing! Unconscious processes include thought processes, such as recall of memories, knowledge, beliefs and emotions.
Conscious processes are behaviour and thoughts that you are aware of consciously. Such as your interpretation of the words you are reading right now, calculations, planning, deliberate actions.
Think of the mind management skills required to be a great leader, a top tennis player. The elite tennis players are able to control and manage their emotions so that they produce the best tennis when the pressure is at the most intense. They are able, just through watching the toss of the ball on an opponents server or the positioning of their body, their backswing, determine where the ball is likely to go and respond in order to produce a return in the blink of an eye. They can’t possibly do all of this consciously, can they? Some of it is conscious and most of it in unconscious.
Great leaders know what to do and say under the utmost pressure to produce a successful communication and outcome. They have hundreds of things to consider at any one time but they are able to be calm and decisive. This is not just down to their conscious actions and thoughts, but a combination of conscious and unconscious, almost instinctive responses.
It has been said numerous times that the winner of the 100m olympic gold medal wins the race before they even get on the starting blocks. I think that this is true and it is a harmonious combination of conscious thoughts and actions with unconscious processes that creates success, happiness and elite performance.
Your future success and happiness
If you are not getting the results that you want in life, if you have behaviours that do not support you, if you are not walking your talk, if you want to be the best in the world in your field, then the answer is the same, improve your mind management skills.
