One of the quirks of Mind is the propensity for us to get completely immersed in our thinking. So much so that it can be compulsive. Breaking state can be a useful exit strategy for this fixated thinking.
It mean changing your emotional state. Eg by looking out of the window or jumping up in the air (safely) or just pay attention to what you are feeling in the here and now.
It is useful for getting out of unresourceful states. It is also useful to break someone’s concentration when they switch their attention from one thing to another. In their own ways trainers have methods for taking their students out of stuck states. One memorable moment I remember was when a trainer threw a cup of paper pieces in the air. People watching thought it was water!! The states were changed..
We also use this term extensively in our NLP Practitioner and NLP Master Practitioner Trainings, both live and online in our NLP training programmes.
