Life can be particularly stressful and the older you get, the more stressful it is likely to become – so why not consider going for mindfulness training online and start practising a bit of the therapy every day? It can really help you to deal with whatever life throws at you, helping to anchor you in the present and stopping you from worrying too much about what the future holds.

There are some very simple things you can start doing right now to help you calm down and relieve those feelings of stress. What about doing a one-minute breathing exercise, which can be done at any time and anywhere? Just focus on your breathing for one minute, starting by breathing in and out slowly and holding your breath while you count to six. Then breathe out slowly. You’ll find your mind wanders quite naturally, but just notice your thoughts for what they are and carry on paying attention to your breathing alone.

Or you could try the gratitude exercise, listing three things every morning that you’re thankful for. This could be anything at all, from food and good health to having loving friends and family in your life.

Another daily exercise to try out is the game of fives, where you try to notice five things each day that you wouldn’t usually notice or appreciate. This isn’t limited to anything and could be something as simple as just listening to the birds outside as you make your way to work.

Visit the Mental Health Foundation website to find a good podcast with visualisation and breathing techniques to help you try out mindfulness for the first time.

The idea of all these exercises is to help you focus on the present moment and become more in tune with it and yourself, allowing yourself to gain a greater understanding of your emotions and to really acknowledge how you feel.
